Re: Front end spring mess

You don't say anything about having a spring adjuster on the front beam. My Citation was built back before they were legal and I had to put about a 45 degree bend in the spring pack to establish ride height. It's a real pain, but that was all you could do. Now, you can put in the adjuster from the b...

Re: Bodywork painting

Last time I did a car, I went to the local trade school. They did it for the price of the paint and a $50 donation to 'lab fees'. They had fun and I got to show them the car after I put the bodywork back on.

Re: Race Gas vrs Av. Gas

But this doesn't get back to the notice that SCCA is 'going green' and not allowing leaded fuels. AV gas is 100LL, that means 'low lead'. It's way less than racing fuels but unless the formulation has changed since the last time I looked it up, it has something like 1/10 of 1 percent lead. Using AV ...

Re: Shock info

Thanks, John When I started racing, state of the art was two very worn-out bug shocks on the front and one (or two) 70/30 coilover Carreras on the rear. Now, the the cars at the pointy end of the grid seem to benefit from a $3k to $5k shock package. I'm sure that like many other things, knowing more...

Re: Official FV Discussion: SCCA Runoffs 2010

Quoting Steve. "The more I run at this place, the more I don't like it for the Runoffs - Steve, FV80 (off line after I post this)" After two years of watching the Runoffs on the computer, it seems more and more like NastyCar at Talladega. Everybody waits until 'The Big One' and then if the...

I've been through the same song and dance. If they don't want to sell it to you, 'It's illegal.' or 'It's a tax thing.' or 'The gummit will get me.' I use only the places now that have the drive-up pumps that take credit cards. Most have a place you can get to off the flight line and it's not too fa...

Re: Throttle cable

I used bicycle cables for years, but I always had adjustment problems, they stretch a lot when new and when they stop stretching, they break. The latest car has some kind of VW woven van cable that is reasonably flexible and doesn't seem to stretch. I ordered a stock VW cable from NAPA and it was mo...

Re: Front Impact Attenuation

Rather than a crush structure for your car, I thought the purpose of the front attenuation was to prevent 'spearing' someone in another car with something extending from the front of your car. Maybe I'm incorrect - again. The way I read it, the old nose filler/push bar that supported a battery was n...

Re: Showcase nationals

OK, I said I would throw out something to look at as far as 2011 Showcase Nationals, so here it is. First, “my” rules. 1) I skipped Rocky Mountain, Northern Pacific, and Southern Pacific. In reality, I also skipped Midwest and Southwest, but not officially, I did look at the choices there. 2) No rov...

Re: Showcase nationals

It's not just NASA that holds up the process of getting tracks. There are the motorcycle groups, the kart groups, and so on above and beyond the other car groups like vintage and marques clubs. Once a region kind of "gets on the list" they are reluctant to give up any dates because at well...

Re: Showcase Regionals

I understand the concern. Here, we used to have all regional/nationals and the top national drivers would run the race for practice against each other and usually pull off at the end to let the mid-pack guys pick up the trophies. Now the organizers are fixated on doing N/N and R/R weekends and the n...

Re: Showcase nationals

Sorry I hijacked the thread to gripe about the Runoffs, my bad. I have a race this weekend, but then I'm off until Memorial Day, so what I'll do is take the April Sportcar event list and pull up a half-dozen or so nationals to see if we can start a list for 2011. My list may end up with some of my '...

There is one on the side of the block next to the distrubutor and that is where I have the oil pressure sender located. also there is a plug on the front of the engine next to the distributor that is not being used and I have seen some guys put there ...

Re: Showcase nationals

Just saw the Runoffs schedule in Fastrack and it reinforced my opinion of why I will likely never participate in the Runoffs again. Four twenty-minute sessions spread out once a day for four days was bad, but three sessions over four days is just a waste of time (and money). Then you get to wait ano...

Re: Oil temp warning light with oil temp gauge

Don't know what your plumbing looks like, so can't offer anything exact. Had two different D-13's and one ran almost constantly with the temp pegged, tried at least a half-dozen different methods. The other one always ran cool on the stock doghouse cooler that fits in the fan shroud. Kind of thing t...

Re: Showcase nationals

That was kind of what happened with the old Pro-Vee series. You could go to an out-of-division race and run in a good field with a vee-only group. I think to make it work would take both an agreement among the drivers and at least some support from the organizers, even if it isn't a race group. But ...

Re: Oil temp warning light with oil temp gauge

Never heard of a temp warning light. I run a pressure warning light, but temp is something I check on one of the straights if I'm not distracted by something else. I'd think that something that causes such a sudden change in temp to need a light to catch it would show up as a loss of pressure or som...

Re: Minimum Weight Survey

When I bought my current car, it was set up for a 205# driver and I had to put 60# of lead in the car. Since then, I have worked to heavy-up the car, adding cross-bracing and stiffeners, full-size bolts, nuts and washers. It had paper washers and cut-off bolts with airframe nuts. All that added abou...

Looking closer, it looks like it might be attached to the tach, it's an Auto Meter. The shift light is on the opposite side of the cockpit, but there are three wires, red, green & black that go back toward the tach. No marks on the tube, just a rubber cap on the back and silicone seal underneath...

Shift Light

One of my cars came with a shift light on the dash. Recently, it has stopped working. Don't see a name, no manual. It's a light blue tube with an orange (yellow?) light. Questions, one, where did it come from, and two, how to test it. Don't know if it's a bad bulb, bad connection, or if it has some ...

Re: Head and neck restraints req'd 1/2012

Thanks for the tip on the hans angle, Jim. I have the 30 degree and have been tempted to try a double regional in something with fenders. This gives me a little more room to work something in by refitting the front wings. It's been 25 years now and I still have never raced anything that I couldn't s...

I had never paid too much attention to the link pins until one time I had a hard time making them up without binding. It was suggested that I check the pins for straight and sure enough, one on each side was bent. Very easy to do when the pins are out, just put a straightedge against them and check ...

Re: Head and neck restraints req'd 1/2012

I'm sure there will be a lot of comments so here goes mine. I tried on the hans at the 07 Runoffs and bought one in 08. My justification was that a 60-year-old body just doesn't resist or recover like a 20-year-old anymore. I have used the horse-collar helmet support since the late 80's and survived...
