Re: Engine oil Viscosity

Brian, trying to talk to you is worse than herding cats. My last try, honest! "What are you talking about? What does this have to do with using low viscosity oil? Are you implying that a .0015 run out case is the best you can do? Is the design of the lubrication system limit by poor case prepar...

Re: Engine oil Viscosity

Now my head hurts. It's amazing that years of study and experience across the industry suddenly become myth. Yes OEM has gone to thinner oil; mostly to improve mileage and they are able to do so with modern machining and control. Try that on a nearly 60 year old engine design. Don't go racing withou...

Re: Engine oil Viscosity

Crank Spec clearance is about .0014 new. It can range up to .0032 if both components are at max wear. History tells me that our cranks really flex at high rpm. Especially in the middle. One touch between crank and bearing means damage. We began to use larger clearances to avoid touches. Synthetic oi...

Hang on folks the revised AD Hoc committee will have greater authority than ever before and will have access to all the letters. Get your pens out. My hat's off to the old committee and all the work they have done for us. Now's the next stage.

Re: FV Intake Manifold Rules Clarification July 2016

The ID of the manifold is what effects flow. The larger the id, the more flow you get. You can etch to the weight and ball size to OD limits and accept the id that you have achieved. If one ball sizes a stock manifold to the largest id possible and you'll find the manifold od too large to fit the ru...

Re: FV Intake Manifold Rules Clarification July 2016

I don't really know why that provision was included but would imagine that making these manifolds any thinner would be a fire hazard. They crack very easily and that can lead to a disaster. Acid dipping is a very volatile and difficult to control. Some makers prefer to size up then thin the outside ...

Re: FV Intake Manifold Rules Clarification July 2016

So little time, so many issues. Bruce, you're rehashing a 6 year old argument. What's done is done. Let's move on. Our vendors get involved because competitors call them and complain. The only viable solution to stop non compliant parts is for competitors to protest. If they're in doubt, they need t...

Re: FV Intake Manifold Rules Clarification July 2016

This class has embarrassed itself in front of the CRB and club for long enough. This class survived for decades without manifold issues until the modifiers decided to read the rules differently. Done in secret for a couple of years, one group of racers lead most fields. Others, having learned they h...

Re: Engine oil Viscosity

Lots of great posts and I agree with almost everything. Current research has begun to identify oil flow as being more important than oil pressure in preventing bearing damage. This study assumes film strengths achieved by synthetic oils. Organic based oils have less film strength given the same visc...

Re: Machined Valve Guide Bosses

I believe the intent is to stop the trend to tiny expensive springs before it starts. Rather than disqualify a bunch of heads based on inconclusive info, setting a minimum spec for the id of the spring will take the incentive to machine the bosses away. Some may argue that it will require more expen...

Re: Un-techable

In the absence of definitive dimensions it is virtually impossible to consider a part non compliant. On several occasions, the ad hoc committee has provided dimensions to the CRB where non existed or were incomplete. Their work was based on researching and measuring several components and arriving a...

While the previous ruling didn't really apply to our class, I have learned this week that the EPA has rescinded the ruling regarding modification of street cars for competition. SCCA through ACCUS and other organizations like SEMA have pursued this issue and got it changed. Here's the link:https://w...

As a competitor and scrutineer, I own and have relied on Frank's book. He also was a FF expert. His book is a bit dated since it's quite old and rules have changed. Like Brian stated, it has a lot of procedural inspection steps that are still valid and I use them at the track and in the shop. Just a...

There are magnets mounted in a threaded sleve. 10/24 I think. Drill and tap the drum and align the sensor in the backing plate. I use a spot inside the shoes and mount the magnet on a web brace of the drum.

Since the angled adjusters do move the shoes fore and aft, sometimes you'll hear a bit of drag but nothing significant. Tap the pedal and it will usually go away. Some folks use two springs on the adjuster end to pull the shoe back down the slope of the adjuster. Using super aggressive compounds on ...

For everyone else following this conversation, our heads were cast in two halves. A very common process even today. The heads were cast using a two half sand mold. As the run progresses, the two halves tend to move side ways relative to one another. This is commonly known as core shift. It still exi...
