Re: Newbe solo questions

These are great links, I've been studying them and others. I like the idea of scribing the tire to set the toe as it reduces the introduction of error from wheel run out. Also with my straight edge method I was measuring to the frame on one side, then under the frame and then to the other straight e...

Re: Newbe solo questions

Oh hi, forgot to check back for a while..... Thanks for the reply Yes I do go on Apex quite a bit but like this site too, hope it keeps rolling along. We did run the car again on the 12th. of March and I went ahead and put in more rear neg. camber, about double to around -2deg. And that did the tric...

Tranny & 1200 longblock cores in Tucson.

Thought someone might be interested. There is a Craigslist posting here in Tucson for 4 type 1 Transaxles and a 1200 cc long bloc. All for $300. "Condition of all unknown". I don't know the seller. Search under auto parts, VW. Should show up.

Thanks for the advice and validation.... I realize my post was a little misleading, I am not using the pulley driven fan but trying to develop an outside ducted air flow from scratch. Tried to upload JPEG photos just now but got a "Could Not Upload Attachment" message.... I have a little l...

Formula First engine cooling

My car came to me minus motor had been previously cooled by factory method. 2 questions... I read on the FFDA website, Conversion section, that the engine needs 20 Sq. In. of air intake. Is that per side or total? I installed a new cyl temp gage from SR Racing, sensor under plug #3 (plug washer remo...

Re: What type of valve springs?

Thanks Jim, What are the advantages/drawbacks to the different push rods Alum. vs CM etc. I've built around 10 race engines in my life, about half were cam in block v-8 engines, some street VW's too. One of the things that attracted me to FST is the viability of racers building their own engines. Ou...

What type of valve springs are recommended for the Formula First engine? The rules allow any spring as long as it's single coil. There is some rust pitting on the springs one set of heads.... Jeremy

Re: Good all around shop welder ???

Thanks Dietmar. So you are saying that the tube that the wire feeds through can be removed from the cable and replaced? Hmmm. The welder is very small and only has a toggle switches for high and low amp settings and a dial for wire feed. If I got a bottle for it , made the repair and replaced the fl...

Good all around shop welder ???

I believe it’s time for me to upgrade my welder. I currently have a little” bread box” 110 volt mig flux core wire(no gas shield) welder by Mack Tools. The wire keeps jamming up where the wire feeds into the cable. I’m thinking of either a medium size Oxy acetylene set or a good used Miller mig weld...

Re: Oil filter questions

Very interesting, “If it aint broke….” The last few days I’ve noticed quite a few type I’s driving around town in +100 deg. weather, of course they are not seeing the high RPM of our formula car engines but the engine is pushing a heavier car and in stop and go driving too. Quite a testament to the ...

Re: Oil filter questions

Ed, Steve Jim and Brian,Thanks for your replies. I did do the web search, I get it now, the cases and pump/cover have to be reconfigured to get full flow filtration otherwise a percentage of the oil is dumped back into the sump. Here is where I’m at. In my quest for track time I purchased a cheap bu...

Oil filter questions

Vee oil filter. I have heard the term “Full flow oil filter” but not sure what that means, does that refer to the filter itself or the housing that holds the filter? I am putting together a FST that came without an engine. The filter that came on the car is rather small with no part number visible…....

What type of fuel to run

As our engines are fairly low compression so what type of fuel is recommended. I'm thinking pump gas should be fine, but I am currently replacing my fuel cell (it leaks) and the foam was extremely deteriorated, Fuel Safe, the cell maker, sells different foam for ethanol vs gasoline based fuel but as...

Engine Tin/Deflectors

There is a post back in 06 where Dietmar recomends using the lower cylinder tin for a fan cooled engine . I am building an engine for a FST car that I got "minus motor", it will be "scoop cooled" from the top down. The sides and bottoms of the cylinders will be open to the breeze...
