Re: January Minutes

1) Because of their stock size. You could use the K/S piston in Chinese cylinders if you want. What is the cost of the K/S pistons and is the combination with the Chinese cylinders cheaper than $400 forged pistons and used cylinders? Who is going to wholesale the K/S pistons? For that matter, who is...

Re: January Minutes

However, if one considers that forged pistons should be more durable and show less wear than cast, and that they should need minimal "race preparation", the cost might not be considered prohibitive by some. Also, with the Euro at a lower level, we once again discussed the pistons still av...

Re: December minutes

Replacement pistons made from forged blanks can be CNC machined to the exact same dimensions of the original VW piston. There are no cast blanks available for this purpose. This low volume custom piston process is based around proprietary shaped forged blanks. The CNC programing allows for a 'no ext...

Does this mean that nothing will change for 2015? I assume the 2015 rule change period is coming to a close.

As to any engines of mine that were torn down after winning the Runoffs, the comment I generally received was "It's nice to see one entirely legal for a change". Thank you in advance, Mike What babble! How long ago did one of your engines win the Runoffs? Assuming your engine was in the s...

Brian, if you go back and really read my post, you will see that I did not imply any particular competitor in my statement but made the statement that DQ's are a result of different actions. Some are mistakes and some are intentional actions in violation of rules. I'm impressed that you are able to...

The FVAHC process is dysfunctional. Giving them more time will not change anything. The CRB made a simple request and the FVAHC was unable to formulate a response. There was plenty of time. They need to be able to function without a taking pole. Proceed with the current CRB proposal and get the chan...

Re: Coating of the piston skirts

Brownell's Teflon/Moly coat is the hot set up for DIY guys. Moly is most commonly applied with bonding or PVD. Bonding contains about 60% moly and must be cured at about 350°F. PVD application is pure Moly and has an application temp of 350-500°F. Both should be considered permanent and not allowed ...

1) I had a 40 HP German brand cylinder set about 15 years ago with Moly coated piston skirts. Moly is really to reduce startup wear.

2) What makes you guys think you can cut your own grooves and get the right surface finish on the ring lands?

Go easy on the brakes when new to reduce the formation of hot spots on the drums and shoes. Simple as that. Same as breaker-in for piston rings and cam shafts. "The center pressure shapes and conditions the drum friction surface into a slight curve and transfers small amounts of friction materi...

'Green or seasoned', these do not sound like metallurgy terms that can get us to a specific metallurgical goal. More like FV mythology. Do the drums need hardening, annealing, etc. for example? First we need to know something about the metal involved and what procedures have been already applied. Ne...

Thanks

Having just finished a new front beam assembly I will gladly make the conversion. All these pins holding the suspension together are a joke. I might even build a new car for the installation. I will start work as soon as approval is granted.

I wonder if VW paid out to anyone but FV last year.

Disc brake weight penalty

What number is being considered for a disc brake usage weight penalty?

Is the ball joint/disc installation heavier than the link pin installation?

I assume any penalty is arbitrary, as there is no way to assess the performance advantage of a ball joint/disc installation.

Your are sure that tire break-in is necessary?

Based on the myth, you are probably will only get one weekend out of a set. If you get two weekends out of the set, does that indicate that break-in is not necessary?

Make sure you save a little for Laguna Runoff specific performance items. Like an exhaust system that moves 2 hp form the 6500 rpm range to the 4500 rpm range.

Re: More tire info...

Not a surprise if you look at the SCCA contingency program. There are no tire contingencies at the Divisional or Regional level events this year as compared to last year. Only the Majors races are covered this year. So that means a total of 150 tires at say $75 (cost?) = $11,250. Note: VW is not on ...

You can learn to acid etch the manifold for yourself. I would be glad to provide info on the process. You will need a couple of cores and 40-120 hrs of time to get the process down.

What is the reason for the angled adjusters? Does it cause the shoe to move toward slave cylinder reducing the retracted shoe gap on the slave cylinder end of the brake shoe? Could this effect induce shoe drag?
