I have the soft (rd4?) Porterfields and they bite a little less than Carbotechs, but are just fine until you want the last 5% of stopping power.

Re: Wheels studs vs. bolts
I've used screw in studs for 20 years. Install with locktite and grind the backside flush to clear the brakeshoe retainers. Use the ones with an allen head recess and check tightness early on until it's evident that they won't loosen in use. I got the perfect nuts to match the chamfer in the wheel a...

Re: Brake shoes
I installed my first set of Porterfields and had to grind a little to clear the drum, but experienced no unusual stuff such as you did,so I suspect it is not related to the shoes.

Re: Brake shoes
When the shoe is too tight in the drum and I'm certain there is no overlooked reason,I'll grind a little off the shoe contact point with the adjuster and wheel cylinder to gain enough clearance to back the star wheel off a few turns.

I've driven my Elise at Pacific Raceways. It's a great car,but there is no comparison to the fv. You'll be astounded when you find out what a vee will do. Schrady's car is clean and unmolested - good choice.
