Re: Engine timing

The clip on wire types can break after repeated install and removal, but being inductance, are very simple. I have a bunch of them at work and I just zip tie the pickup wire to the spark plug wire. The clip is simply to hold it in place and serves no other purpose.

Re: New engine developed at VW

And I was Our company was involved with FEV on the DARPA side of this project years ago. We designed a lightweight, high torque clutching system to engage/disengage the second engine module on demand. This was for the initial helicopter program. Interesting and pleasant group of guys to work with. A...

I once pumped up a Penske with a bike pump while building it, figured I would just go until I could not. Checked the pressure the next day, 90psi.

Re: Air compressor & generators

I can attest to the quality of the Honda 1kw generator. Just remember that the battery charger is not a selectable output amperage, so you may not want to charge your FV battery with it, it may charge at 6 to 8 amps if you do, reducing the life of the battery.

Re: Needle Bearing Front Beam Spacers

Without looking for the price of the bearings for the link pins I can only guess that since they are smaller than the ones for the sway bar spacer they are most likely cheaper as well. so $50 for bearings is probably way to much. You only need 4 of them and at probably $1-$1.50 each is not much. Ed...

Bearings are free, but engine bearings must be of the same type as OE. I don't feel like looking up GCR quotes.

Re: Need opinion on car to use for drivers school

Time to piss is about the best you will get! These one weekend drivers schools are action packed. Everything has to be perfect before you signup. A non FV experienced crew will not cut it. There is no time for them to learn the ropes, as simple as the may be. Are you familiar with the school costs?...

Re: Minimum Weight Survey

I took my new car out for the first time recently. It comes in at 940lbs with me (160lbs) after the race (verified on two sets of scales). I have done the best I can to add weight without cutting off the existing steel floor and welding on a thicker one or weakening the frame by drilling through it....

Re: Front Shock info wanted

I mean that the individual who allowed me to dyno his shocks, while very fast, uses a set up different than most, if not all; their front shocks are certainly set up drastically different that most FVs. My goal is to find my own setup, but would like to know more about what other people are using (b...

One or two of the articles quotes the FIA on saying that it will be a F1 only track, single use. That combined with other things relating to this deal make me very skeptical that it will be completed.

Our springs tend to be one week of winter followed by one week of summer, and the cycle repeats. In June I still bring a jacket, but the chances of using it are slim. Last year at the Summit Point National in May it was in the mid 40s with a strong wind.

Re: Front Shock info wanted

Brian,
Do you use a full shim stack on each side?

I have had some front Penskes on a dyno, however, I do not believe them to be a fair representation of what most drivers are using. Before I put the shocks on my car for a weekend, I want to be aware of what the standard is.

The filter Ed uses is a purolater # L10241, fram ph3614, or ac delco # pf53. It is about as short as they come, and is also narrower than the ph16 that many use, but will fit on most all american remote filter mounts.

Re: oil leak

I have seen instances where a valve adjuster nut comes loose causing the adjuster to back out. The adjuster eventually hits the valve cover and pushes it up and crooked. It will look like it is on straight, but leak as if it is not even on the engine. Normally, gaskets like those do not just fail al...

I do not see how a link pin can cause steering bind, but it can definitly cause suspension bind. Grease it with a grease gun. I forgot to do that after assembling a beam and the pins froze up.

The MARRS series at Summit Point has been averaging 16 cars a weekend. The Labor Day Double is normally the biggest race. Re: Soft Suspensions

One possibility is that the softer suspensions absorb track irregularities better making the car more stable on odd surfaces, like those often found in repaired corners. On a similar note, I have been working with dampeners lately and have seen a set that came from a car that was very fast at the 20...

Re: So that was the funny noise...

I'm sure you do not need to be told this, but it is always worth mentioning. Maybe someone doing a future search will find it useful. Always make sure that you have oil pressure before you start the engine, and watch it for a while after the first start. It can take a lot of cranking until you build...
