Re: July Meeting
I believe that all the high-price spec tire series like F1, MotoGP, etc., have several tire compounds available at each race. The available compounds are chosen different for each track to suit that track. But, the problem they have is that not everyone's chassis works with the spec tire. The tire c...

Re: Oil Sump Rule Change
That does allow us to mess with the valve covers, but the sump rule would have to allow an external connection, or be unrestricted, too. Why can't the rule just list the restrictions that make sense? The volume should be unrestricted. I can see that it shouldn't hang below the car so that it grinds ...

Re: July Meeting
I agree with smsazzy. It seems that some regions in the US and the Canadians are running spec tires and that apparently is working for them. If this is the case, I don't see why the committee needs to get involved and help get a spec tire rule for the nation. I think we should let regions deal with ...

Re: Question about spring length
Why will the handling be different if he changes the rear spring rates within the range specified in the thread? Interested in your opinion. Brian Off the top of my head, if you do as you say, then the ride height should be able to be maintained. But, the different spring rate would have the car re...

Re: July Meeting
Dietmar, Thanks for the post about the July meeting. I like what I hear - very encouraging. This is a great way to deal with these issues. We need more input than just the handful that regularly post to the forum to understand what the community wants to do, and I hope your request will get most peo...

Re: Oil Sump Rule Change
Brian, thanks. On the web, all the windage trays I found look like the one at the bottom of the page in the link below. Assuming that's similar to what you're talking about I can understand what you described. I also saw 1.5 & 3.5 qt sumps. There were no dimensions given. http://www.dansperforma...

Re: Oil Sump Rule Change
Thanks Brian. Okay, now I understand. I didn't know exactly what was in there for windage and oil control - sounds pretty good. Is what you described standard practice for all the FV engine builders? Let me ask another question, could the same windage also be stopping oil from getting back down into...

Re: Oil Sump Rule Change
Brian, You're talking about the oil pumping through the system getting into the valve train area, and I would agree with you. I was talking about sloshing oil getting up there. The question is, if the oil is not returning to the sump through the sump opening, then where is it going? I thought some o...

Re: Oil Sump Rule Change
Possible sump capacity.... remember that in a hard corner only half the oil of the sump capacity is available for the for a normal fixed position pickup. The other half will be positioned away from the pickup. So, a 2 qt sump is only good for 1 useable qt of oil. A swinging sump extension will not ...

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?
The fact that some or all of what I mentioned was discussed 8 years ago is good to know. So, what was done and what was the outcome? Don't want to be a smarty pants, but the answer is: FST was the only outcome. You're not being a smarty pants at all. I realized that FST was an outcome of previous d...

Hi Bill, thanks for the comments. I was just trying to focus the discussion back to what Jim wanted us to consider, and then just added something else to discuss and consider. I agree I have added nothing that was not mentioned sometime in the past - in fact no one here has posted anything new, I'm ...

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?
ChrisZ has had some very good points. I agree that FV does not need to be saved, but that we need to have a plan for the future. rstackjd's 600cc motorcycle engine based car does sound like fun, but I think the problem is that even a 600cc motorcycle engine puts out over 100 HP. If we're at that pow...

Re: NH Sept 12-13
I'll give you some rough numbers for prices, and others can correct me if they have more accurate numbers. The test day is $150. If you can convince them you'll only run the last two sessions, then the price is $60. I would call and ask to get their pricing policy. The double race weekend is usually...

Re: June Meeting
Bruce, The point you made about the 250 cc's getting sucked up in 1/2 a second should open some eyes and make the powers that be not hesitate to do what we want. That and the data acquisition points should be convincing. I'm not interested in turning this into a technical discussion, but I'm curious...

Andy,
Nice video - nice driving! That was the clearest video I've seen yet. That little Go-Pro did a great job.

Re: HP vrs Torque for Dummies
rstackjd, For racing applications, in general it's hard not to side with the engine with the highest peak HP. But, as you pointed out, the application (e.g., the specific race track) can make all the difference. Let me add that without also specifying the transmission gear ratios, that the question ...

Check you torque wrench since it might be off and that is why they stripped, which was my original problem. Also I only torque to 65lbs. Yes, always a good thing to check. Another thing, when you use a clicker torque wrench, throughtout the weekend as you check your lugs nuts each time the "cl...

Re: April Fastrack--Oil Sumps
It works. It probably costs no more than a set of tires and will, I think, allow more time between rebuilds, and should elevate FV out of the oil polluting ranks. :) SteveO All good. Would it impact the amount of oil on the track toward the end of an FV race? If so, would it result in a significant...

Re: April Fastrack--Oil Sumps
Can someone give an indication of the difference in wear and tear as compared with what we run now or a baffled, but larger, sump? Dave mentioned a head freshen would all that would be needed with a dry sump. That sounds like a $400 savings alone as compared with a seasonal rebuild. Am I off?

Re: April Fastrack--Oil Sumps
Yes, very ironic. SCCA's an organization run by many people. To me that means that the reason can vary from the left hand not know what the right hand is doing, to the timing of when different information was received by the CRB and was drafted into the newsletter, to perhaps SCCA reviewers believin...
