Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Since your pipes are within 1/4 inch of each other, just cut off the long ones so they are all at the same point before going into the collector. The were not built so the top pipes were longer than the lower to make them easier to install. The pipes move around after being used a while....you know ...

Re: carb fuel line fitting

The thread size for the stock screw in steel tube with the aluminum ferrule is 12x1.5 mm (same as the lug bolts on the 1200 sedan). If your threads inthe carb top are messed up, the 12x1.5 helicoil works great to fix it.

You should be able to get the pieces for Bob at LRE
Hope this helps.

Re: Needle Bearing Front Beam Spacers

I have found some needle bearing link pin bushings over the years. They were in some 'rebuilt' spindles that were rebuilt in Germany and still in the boxes when I received them. As suggested in a prior post, they are not done as 'offset' bushings as most of the Vee's are using. Not saying they could...

Re: Gutting a VW transmission

MartinRacing, Your initial post and question indicated that you have an IRS transaxle that you want to use for a mockup. The IRS transaxles for the beetle from about 1972 (or so) use a large (about 4 inch) thin round nut to hold the pinion bearing in place in the trans case. This does not have the 4...

Re: codes stamped on transaxle

Yes the 1.22 is the 3rd gear ratio. The .89 is the 4th gear ratio (the other legal 4th gear is a .82 ratio, but that one is not commonly used) And the date is when the trans was last done by Bob. All of that info would be correct as of the dates stamped on the trans cases at LRE. If someone else has...

Re: Exhaust Systems

There are other reasons for having different length primaries. Several of the systems I have built had a different length for the front two pipes versus the rear two pipes. The testing that I have done also indicates that the 4-2-1 collector does not necessarily hurt the top rpm power. Some have sho...

Re: oil leak

John, Several possibilities. 1) Valve cover gasket leak. Should be easy to spot when you remove the valve cover. The gasket will be 'loose' in a spot and no longer glued to the valve cover. The gasket would also likely be sticking up up a little bit and slightly deformed. 2) You may have a broken he...

Re: ADAMS Aero Steering linkage

Bob, If you want to drive to Appleton (Freedom) Wisconsin some weekend, you can look at the later steering arrangement on my Adams car. You can look, take pictures, and measure to your heart's content. Mine has the single tie rod arm between oth spindles and then the triangular piece that connects t...

Re: Custom Seat Question

Bob. You need to think of your newly foamed (or bead) part as a cushion. It is not your seat. The seat in your car is your fuel cell cover and any aluminum or fiberglass pieces that are around your hips to shoulders. We don't fasten the foam (bead) part in. When you pour the foam seat or make the be...

Re: Best airport for the Runoffs?

Quinn,

Appleton and Green Bay airports are both about an hour from Road America.

I live in Appleton, but I won't be leaving the track till the end of the day on the FV race day.

Re: Rhino Case

I'd like to clarify something related to this thread. I believe there are three items being discussed here. 1.. The Rhino Case. Probably not legal as a replacement part. Certainly the extra strength (and weight) is not necessary for a FV transaxle. 2.. The heavy duty aftermarket side covers. These a...

Re: Rhino Case

I would think that the aftermarket 'heavy duty side covers' would NOT be legal for FV. They may not be of the same material (some are steel) and are not dimensionally identical. I would also say that you do not need them. The FV engine does not have enough power to flex the ring gear side 'side cove...

Re: Transmissions one more time

The 'Short box' has a 4.375 ratio ring & pinion (8 teeth on pinion, 35 teeth on ring gear). Short box has a higher numerical ratio (slower speed for a given engine rpm), thus a 'short' track transaxle. The 'Long box' has a 4.125 ratio ring & pinion (8 teeth on pinion, 33 teeth on ring gear)....

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices

Bill and Dave, Bill is the closest. I think I have between 5 and 10 40hp manifolds that are not FV manifolds. Years ago, I decided that I would'nt build manifolds after removing the 'heat riser' tube on a few and trying to figure out how to ball size them and all that stuff. Besides Mike Kochanski h...

Re: Extended sump question

I had already asked the seller (builder) of the sumps on ebay about how deep they were (from case mounting surface to the actual bottom of the sump).. His reply to me was that were a shade over 1 5/8" deep. I did not ask about the outside diameter of the bottom of the sump where the drain bolt ...
