Re: Drag Coefficient

Earlier I mis-spoke. The range of measurements for various configurations of a Citation were from the low 0.6s to the high 0.7s. That is a lot of variability for a small range of configurations! Also, as mentioned previously, the wind tunnel did not have a moving ground plane. Sometimes, at some val...

Re: Drag Coefficient

First off the calculation of the drag coefficient for a shape as complicated as a FV is an extraordinarily complex undertaking, which requires mastery of CFD codes and a supercomputer, even today. So if anyone tells you that they have a code that works on your PC they are talking about a very ballpa...

Re: Low turnouts

So by your irrefutable logic we could cut costs in FV and alleviate the shortage in parts by replacing our VW 1200s with lawn mower engines - say 50 cc. That would make the risk management folks happy too. As far as the tire thing goes, why not just go to street tires? That is what Skippy does. Agai...

Re: Low turnouts

I think it is necessary to analyze the difference between turnouts at the regional and national levels. Here in the mid-Atlantic area, regional turnouts are quite good - 17 Vees already for the regional at Summit Point at the (sweltering) August 2 regional. I don't think there were 17 Vees altogethe...

I have the impression from reading the posts on this site that there is a lot of dissatisfaction within the FV community, and I notice also that there seems to be a fair amount of misinformation floating about. So what else is new, right? I don't know what can be done about the dissatisfaction, exce...

Re: Road Atlanta National

Davis ran away and hid; I think he opened up a at at about 2 seconds per lap. Leonard and Schiff ran nose to tail the whole race, swapping places from time to time. Schiff happened to be in 2nd at the end. It's too bad not more drivers showed up. We ran with the F5s, FFs and FCs. There were ZERO pro...

Re: EGT

The previous reply, while usually correct, is probably not helpful in all cases. Conditions can change quickly enough to require a change of jetting over the course of a single day, but unless you have calibrated your car you won't know it until you get that afternoon EGT reading. What you basically...

Re: Rear wheel bearings

In answer to your questions. First, yes, the rear wheel bearing is lubricated by transmission fluid. So no, you do NOT add any grease. A rear wheel bearing rebuild kit typically includes two O-rings, a paper gasket, and a seal. Most VW books show the assembly, but here is an outline. The paper gaske...

Re: Revamped National Racing Program and Runoff???

I think there is no hope for any substantial change to the runoffs, and certainly no change that would satisfy even the majority, so I will focus my comments on revamping the national schedules. Davis makes a good point about running the runoffs at tracks where people want to go. I think the same ap...

Re: Fuel testing rules

Oh, and by the way, the so-called rumor is at least in part true. It is illegal to use unleaded fuel in Canada, except under extraordinarily limited circumstances; circumstances that could never apply to a FV. And yet, last year the SCCA held a National race at Mosport, "in accordance with the ...

Re: Fuel testing rules

I could not disagree more strongly with Fred. I am one of the people who wants to use unleaded gas, and would be happy to use "pump" gas if I were allowed to. (Like I need 110 octane for my 7.3:1 compression ratio.) You make aspersions about people who want to be "GREEN", in your...

Re: Fire Extinguisher In Paddock

I have never seen it enforced in the 8 or 10 times I went there. The really strange thing is that there is no requirement to have a fire extinguisher at Road Atlanta or at Lanier Speedway, even though these tracks are also in Georgia.

Re: Fuel testing rules

You guys seem to have missed part of my point, and the URL pointed to above illustrates it. Not only does unleaded race gas or pump fuel have a nonzero DC, but a number of LEGITIMATE leaded fuels do also. In other words, there is a high probability of false positives with the testing. This is not ju...

Re: Fuel testing rules

If you seriously research the fuel issue - which means you remember your organic chemistry and go to web sites other than that of the SCCA, you will find that there are a lot of ways in which legitimate fuel can fail the tests that the SCCA use. In particular, if you go to the track and use their 10...

Registration Glitch

I drive a "current FV" and went to the dlbracing site to register. In the process of doing so, when I selected "Current FV#1"...l"Current FV#3", (any of the above), it would not let me select a number, saying no numbers available. This prevents one from completing regis...

Speed traps abound

A word to the wise - the cops around Roebling always seem to be in force whenever racers are in town. They set up static and moving radar speed traps, Ku band, both CW and Instant On. They sometimes operate two cars in tandem - one with his radar blaring goes by at speed, while the next lurks behind...
