SOLD - Comet Solo Vee for sale

Yes, it's for sale yet again. Originally a 1974 Comet (home built) formula vee, then converted to solo vee spec. This car has changed hands many times throughout its long life. But, as the story often goes, family obligations, lack of time, lack of money, etc. etc., have forced me to sell the beast....

Solo Vee found on eBay

A vee I found on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-mid-engine-Race-car-autocross-vintage-dunebuggy-/330538633941?pt=Race_Cars_Not_Street_Legal_&hash=item4cf5a34ad5#v4-31 It's got rack & pinion steering, what looks like 15" front wheels and 17" rears, and an interesting rear s...

Re: OIL BREATHER KIT

When I first bought my solo vee, it had the stock oil filler tower with a crude vent system that always filled up the catch tank after 3 runs. When I had my solo vee engine rebuilt at SR, I asked Jim about valve cover vents. He said it wasn't good for racing, and recommended replacing the stock oil ...

The density of magnesium is about 1.74, and aluminum is about 2.8. So if the magnesium case saves 15 lbs, then it weighs about 25 lbs and the aluminum case weighs about 40 lbs.

Re: website hosting

Your best bet is to shop around. It takes a long time, but you can find good deals. We have a domain for our family website, and it's pretty cheap (ICDSoft). If you plan on storing large files--video and such--you'll need lots of storage space. But video is easy to post on youtube and just link to i...

Re: Rationals scheduled in the West

The rumor I heard many years ago was that the club racing side of SCCA helped pay for the (unprofitable) pro racing side. Is there any truth to that?

@Ed: If I win the lottery (or similar), I'll pay you to build a solo car. Then you can run a few more races. :)

Re: Rationals scheduled in the West

After having road raced for over 30 years the constant increase in cost and the diminishing fun factor are starting to cause me to actually think about stopping racing which is something I thought I would never do. Of course other activities are looking better because they don't cost as much and yo...

Re: A Mono Shock rotary damper system...

NOTE -no toe out in the rear unless you are running autocross or wish to see where you have been more that where you are going.... I can vouch for that. I adjust the amount of throttle oversteer on my solo vee by changing the rear toe. Some toe in almost prevents oversteer, toe out allows me to rot...

Re: Static Rear Camber Setting

What is the maximum angle the rear axles can move up or down without causing drag or damage? That question is to help answer the next question: In a typical zero-roll car, can the chassis roll enough to hit those limits? Or does some other geometry prevent that? My guess is that the front beam doesn...

So do you know exactly what size valves are on the 1915? And how much head work it has?

I had a trailing arm break at speed in an autocross. Can you say "instant loss of control"? The bottom of the frame dragging on pavement does slow you down quickly.

Re: Nationals

Aren't the rear tires we use the same size as Formula Atlantics and S2000s? The runoffs may use up some.
Plus I believe most of the DMod cars use that size on all 4 corners.
Will the Hoosier truck be there at Nationals?

Bugout, Manassas Virginia, September 5th

Bugout is a low-key VW car show, swap meet, 1/8 mile bracket drag race, and slalom. It is about 80% air cooled and 20% water. The show always includes VWs of all ages, from bone stock to highly modifed, and rust buckets to concours level. The swap meet will have dozens of vendors with aftermarket, N...

Re: solo vee novice

My reverse lockout is on the shifter and it works well--once it's adjusted correctly. I just loosen a wing nut and flip the lever out of the way and I can get reverse. The most important thing with the shift mechanism is to make sure all the joints and bolts are tight. A threaded bolt going through ...

Re: solo vee novice

The R25s will be faster than the R35s. You may be able to use the wider tires with the softer compound--it depends on the weather. You should check tire temperatues. You may find that the R35s don't get up to temperature. Here in the DC region, a hot sunny day can heat up my tires so much that they ...

Re: Cooling???

My solo vee has the 1600 built to the old rules (85 hp). I have a hand pumped spray bottle--like a Windex bottle--that I use to spray the heads after each run. I spray a few pumps on each head, then wait a minute, then spray again. I do that until the water doesn't steam. The motor has been running ...

Re: Soft Suspensions

So why not run "rain" soft all the time? The advantages you state are valid in the dry too. Brian I think the main reason is speed. The faster you go, the stiffer the suspension needs to be. (A stiffer spring has a higher frequency, so it reacts faster to an input.) In the rain, lap times...

Re: Soft Suspensions

here's a question. what is it about a softer suspension that makes it better in the rain? even on a very smooth racetrack? I think it has to do with the smoothness of the lateral forces. If you look at the lateral g-forces in a turn, any bump can cause a spike. A spike in lateral g's can push the t...
