Re: Find friends at Runoffs

Hi Steve: Thank you for sharing the plan, it is of interest as well for people like me who are not able to attend but would love to be there. Will you or somebody else be posting a summary of activities happening at the track (either here or Apexspeed)? The broadcast only start end of next week, and...

Re: Sebring Majors?

Hi Steve: First of all, I am sorry to hear of your accident; It seems you are unhurt and I guess that's what is the most important. To answer your question, I wanted to know what had happened at the track. There's obviously racing going on, Homestead a couple of weeks ago, Sebring this past week-end...

Would anybody have a bit to say about the Majors at Sebring this pas week-end? Looked up the sheet results and would like to know what happened.

Thanks,

SOLD: Penske 8100

For sale, Penske 8100. Came with car I had bought, raced with it for 2 seasons. Left as last raced in 2011, valving A/D. I can't see anything wrong with it except scuffs and bumps at the bottom of the remote canister. Like everything 4th hand, it probably needs to be gone over before used. Measures ...

Runoffs 2015

This is information I am posting on behalf of Stevan Davis with regards to the runoffs at Daytona: It’s hot .. but not nearly as hot (so far) as it usually was when I used to come in May (mid 80’s when the sun if out.. but lots of clouds, so low 80’s most of the time). Light rain overnight.. nothing...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?

Hi: I have been racing on Falkens since 2010, in events sanctioned by the Western Canada Motorsport Association (WCMA). I would like to share my experience. I haven't run anything else on a FV, certainly not slicks. I can't provide a comparison between the 2 types of tires. I do see benefits though ...

Re: Just don't get it!

The exception being the Canadian standard. For the most part, it is a US FV with the 14" wheel/tire package. As you said it is a US FV for the most part, but it is unfair to describe it as mostly an SCCA FV on a different set of tires. In fact the tire difference has a huge impact on the class...

Re: Front drum part number

Thanks for the replies. What Brian mentioned about heat cracking on the front drums is similar to what I had heard, but somehow a different result. I heard that the contact patch of the drum would heat very quick with Carbotechs while the part that is connected to the spindle would stay relatively c...

Re: Front drum part number

So one of those front drums I had bought after I started this thread broke. Or I should say cracked. I noticed the crack while torquing the wheel about 15min from the start of a race. Seems like they lasted about 1 season, or 30 races (plus practices and qualifying). I had changed both at the front ...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Hi Mike: The pictures where taken after a week-end where it seems I had a leaky intake manifold. My intake was repaired with brazing and the weld was leaking. This is why, I think it shows so lean. I fixed that and also found the cracked piston. Either way only piston 3 out of the 4 had bad leak dow...

Hi Mike: Thanks for the reply, I apologize for missing it, this site doesn't have automatic email notifications.... I've switched to Apexspeed which is much easier to use to follow discussions. Last summer I did get to install and remove the heads several times. I think 6 times total? I ended up get...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Hi Jim: Thanks for the reply. Hum I guess I'll leave it like this for the remainder of the season, I only have one race week-end left and won't have time to integrate an EGT sensor. As a side note, I might have spoken too quick. Using the same testing setup I noticed leaks on both head ports (where ...

More findings on cylinder #3

Hi: I've replaced the damaged piston and all cylinders and heads are back on the engine. I've installed the intake manifold and built a tool to check proper mating with the heads. http://s15.postimage.org/l6gi0g323/IMG00053_20120909_1551.jpg The tool pressurizes the intake manifold and the heads (in...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Got in touch with a few engine builders to try and source a replacement piston. Bill Vallis was able to locate an exact match to what I had, within 2g (even better, it's heavier) and pretty much right on in terms of wrist pin to top crown distance. He shipped it yesterday, I got it today. Might be i...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Hi Jim: I went to a shop that has a stock of brand new FV pistons/cylinders (Noble stock from 10 years ago). As well they have pistons taken from expired engines. My piston is much heavier than the Noble stock, by about 30g. This is funny because the wrist pin I use is also much heavier than the one...

Cracked piston

A follow up on this. recently I acquired a soda blaster gun. So I disassembled both heads to clean up the combustion chambers. I noticed a funny shape on piston #3, by the way this cylinder always scored bad leak down numbers, even with new rings (the cylinder seems a bit oversize too). I was textin...

Re: A few questions about heads

I was cleaning the other set of heads, the ones I race with (cylinders #3 and #4). I noticed something that looks like a crack, refer to picture below. This is intake #4 and what looks like a crack on the left is oriented towards the middle of the head (on the other side of the wall there's a vertic...

Oil ring gap orientation

Hi: Is it critical to orient the oil ring gap towards the top? I thought I remembered well, didn't bother taking a 3 min walk to get to the house to check the VW manual, installed the oil ring facing down (towards the road). Permatex-ed everything, cylinders, push rod tubes, torqued the heads. Then ...
