Re: HELP! Read axle/hub problem

I have seen an bearing casting moved down onto the axle tube which would act like too long of an axle, same sympton as if the bell is bent and the tube pushed into it. If the axle tube is off the car, set it next to another tube - bet the one coming off the car is short... Good luck & saa ya at ...

Re: Autodynamics Body Work

There was someone in Colorado ( probably 10 yrs ago ) that had molds for the early AutoD cars. Might check with any of the Vee guys in Colorado. If I recall the parts took some work to get them to fit right but hey they were new.

Don, Just a few random thoughts that may or not answer your question. I race a Monoposto legal vintage vee ( fully functioning charging system ), I aso build engines for many friends / competitors and have spent many hours testing vee engines on the dyno. 1) I do not believe the horsepower drain fro...

Re: A few questions about heads

In regards to the spark plug thread issue - based on my experience with vintage race heads I would either use the timesert " Big Sert " or have them welded. The Big Sert has a mechanical means of locking the insert in place and it will not come out without destroying the head. Welding - I ...

Re: Vintage Tires

Stephen, I have been running on the Hoosier Vintage tire on my Zink for the last 3 seasons ( my guess is maybe 12 weekends ) and they are probably 1/2 worn ( I'm mid pack )They will outlast the Dunlops, however many ( not all ) feel the Dunlops are slightly quicker. My perception is they are not as ...

Re: WTB ATL FC-152 Fuel cell

I will second what Greg R. has to say about Eagle. As I do restorations on Vintage Vees I have had Eagle do probably 8 or 10 cells in the past few years ( ordering 2 more this month ). They have never quoted me more than 3 weeks delivery and have never been late - often I have it by the date quoted ...

Re: Fuel Cell size in a Lynx?

I have tried to put that ATL cell in a Lynx - with a cover and the fact the shift rod enroaches into the Rt rear corner it just doesn't work well. It has been done but I fear for longivity with the shift rod right there ( protected but it still pinches causing a stress point ). I had custom cells ( ...

Re: Zink prep

Barry, I can't speak for the SCCA but on the Vintage side of your questions - most Vintage organizations will not have a problem with your running the car with the SCCA mandated ( ugly ) roll cages. Vintage groups mostly will be concerned with the car having treader tires, a z-bar and 2 rear shocks,...

Re: Hoosier vs Dunlop Vintage Tire

I will mostly agree with Ajax on the differences. I am running Hoosiers, am on my 3rd season ( 12 or 13 events ) and they seem to have lots of tread left. I'm not sure I like the Hoosiers in the cold ( early spring or fall ) but they sure were working today at Grattan ( low 80 for temp ). The other ...

Re: Cam Wear

I'd bet on it being the oil. With our solid lifer engines ( aka flat tappet ) we HAVE to use a racing oil ( Red Line, Royal Purple, Brad Penn ) or the " not street legal" Valovine oils. Street oils just dont have near enough ZDDP to keep the cams from wearing out very quickly. If you insis...

Re: Looking for Header System

I have been around 4 or 5 early AutoD's and all the exhaust systems have been different. There is some variation between chassis, may have to have one built on the car. Roxanne was able to do one close for me a few years ago from pics but I think I would want to do it on the car. Good luck, Bob

Re: Front axle preparation

If you are not sure about pressing the offset bushings in, I would suggest you send them to Dietmar or SR or your perfered F/Vee shop. You probably want to have them check the king pins at the same time to make sure all is in perfect condition ( not sloppy loose ) when you put it all back together. ...

Unless you have a press to disassemble and an alignment jig for the forks you are way ahead of taking it to a pro - Bob Lybarger is in McHenry, just NW of Chicago. On frustration alone it is worth it, let alone how many entry fees you waste sorting it out. Call Bob at 815-363-8560

Re: The start of a project

I am pretty sure it is not either a Lynx or a Zink. I have seen a lot of Vees in the last 20 years and don't recall any that looked like this. I would suspect a homebuilt . What part of Chicago are you in? If you are near the SW part of the city there will be 19 Vintage Vees out playing this weekend...

Re: Need help identifiying this Vee

Trevor, I think you are going in the right direction - I would guess it is an early Autodynamics that has had some modifications thru it's long life. The roll hoop is wrong for the early AD cars but it could have been changed. The shift linkage has been changed. Do you have the damaged nose and the ...

Re: fire system question - VSCDA

I agree the VSCDA rule is a bit unclear - however we ( VSCDA ) have adopted the Monoposto Racing rules in total which means if your are running an open wheel car you are required to have a 5 #, on board system. I know that is not the answer you wanted but better now than at the track. If you have an...

A couple of comments. 1) A couple of us in VSCDA have run the Hoosiers this year and I for one like them. They are every bit equal to the Dunlops and quite a bit cheaper. 2) Only a few have run anything other than the Dunlops or Hoosiers here in the midwest. 3) Radials don't work; they are slow enou...

Re: Engine Cases

I will add to Brian's comments. If you are just buying a loose case ( not a complete engine ) you probably also need to drill all the soft plugs out and tap them for threaded plugs. You never know what is up inside the oil passageways - I bought a used case, jet cleaned it, assembled it and lost the...

Re: Early Autodynamic ?

Scotty, Thanks for the side picture. I believe your car to be a Mk II ( Series 2 ) because of the length of the trailing arms. I have a customer with an early Auto D that the trailing arms are shorter and the mount is about 2" behind the firewall plane. The real expert is the original designer ...
